This morning I saw speedwell

This morning I saw speedwell

spread across blown dust

from garden banks,

asserting resurrection truth

with bold sky-mimicry

on pavement-stone.

A thought rose up also:

if I had not been looking down

this is a truth

that would have passed me by.

This morning I saw speedwell.

Sleeping buds unclench

Safe from the fangs of the frost.

This year’s first warm day.

Too much like hard work,

remembering to breathe in

stagnant, storm-thick air.
