A hook-tooth protrudes.

A lupine snarl. My dog, rapt

in ancestral dreams.

This morning I saw speedwell

This morning I saw speedwell

spread across blown dust

from garden banks,

asserting resurrection truth

with bold sky-mimicry

on pavement-stone.

A thought rose up also:

if I had not been looking down

this is a truth

that would have passed me by.

This morning I saw speedwell.

incoming twilight and tide:

reluctant escape.

Faint opalescence

relieves blue monotony.

Fragment of day-moon.

NPG D7156; Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Bt by Samuel William Reynolds, after William Owen

Portrait on landscape

Against a turbulent sky,

dark hair wind-teased, he

half-turns. His arms are folded tight

against the cold, or with a feigned indifference

or diffidence, already aware of the scrutiny

of unborn thousands.

But look into those haughty eyes

forever fixing on the middle distance to your left

and you may see a visionary

who chose politics to express his poetry.

Sleeping buds unclench

Safe from the fangs of the frost.

This year’s first warm day.

Too much like hard work,

remembering to breathe in

stagnant, storm-thick air.

From the dust, gold, tears

and fire of a hidden life

poetry is formed.
